Character Background: Mary Winchester, nee Campbell was born 5 December 1953 and grew up in Lawrence, Kansas. Coming from a family of hunters, Mary grew up learning the trade while still trying to be a normal girl. By about eighteen or nineteen years of age, Mary was already dating John Winchester and had been for a while, despite her father’s disapproval of him.
In 1973, John was recently back from Vietnam and Mary knew he was probably going to ask her to marry him soon. They had what would’ve been a normal date, were it not for Mary being aware that they were being followed by Dean, who had been sent back in time by Castiel. Their back alley confrontation revealed to Dean that his mother was not only experienced in hand-to-hand combat, but she was also a hunter.
Mary and Dean formed a sense of camaraderie as Dean tried hunting the yellow-eyed demon, Azazel. She felt even more obligated to get involved when she found out the demon was supposed to be at her friend’s place. Unfortunately, this was where Azazel first noticed Mary and became interested in her. He possessed Samuel Campbell, and in a confrontation with Dean, Mary’s mother was killed and Samuel stabbed so he would also be dead when Azazel stopped possessing him.
Mary was with John when this happened, and when Azazel caught up to them in Samuel’s body, he killed John as well. This left Mary completely desperate, because she’d conceivably lost everyone that mattered to her. Azazel refused to bring her parents back, but he would bring John back if she made a deal with him—if she agreed to give him permission. She didn’t know specifics, just that she wasn’t selling her soul and no one would be hurt as long as he wasn’t interrupted when the time came. Thus, she sealed the deal with a kiss before Dean could stop her. (This turned out to be permission to give baby Sam demon blood, as he was destined to be Lucifer’s vessel, and this was also why Azazel was willing to bring John back to life, as the birth of the Winchester brothers was essential.)
Mary’s canon point is taken prior to “The Song Remains the Same,” which is sometime mid-to late 1978, and she is already pregnant with Dean. Instead of this, it’ll be early 1978, and she’ll still have been married to John for a couple years at minimum.
Abilities/Special Powers: Mary is a hunter, so she not only has experience and knowledge with hunting and killing the supernatural, but she also knows martial arts and knows how to use weaponry. She’s far from helpless.
Third-Person Sample:
The sunlight hitting Mary’s eyes surely meant that it was morning. It was the weekend, so she could afford to sleep in if she wanted, but after a few moments of stirring, she instead reached across the bed to see if John was up or not. Instead of feeling blanket or her husband’s form beside her, her hand met soft blades of grass. Once she woke up enough to make that connection, she sat up and looked around. This certainly didn’t make sense, unless she was still dreaming. It was still winter in Lawrence, and it had been months since grass had been this green, if visible at all. “John?”
Mary knew to keep her wits about her; panicking wouldn’t do her any good. If she panicked, it could overlook something important. Growing up in a hunting family taught her to be resourceful and observant, and she knew well enough to know that just because she didn’t see anyone around, didn’t mean she was alone here. Someone was bound to have answers, and Mary could only hope that anyone here was friendly and not someone dangerous. She didn’t hunt anymore and she didn’t get involved in anything like that at all, but if it came to it, she was certain she could defend herself in most circumstances despite being unarmed.
Closer inspection of the area led her to find a journal, although she hadn’t a clue what to even do with it. She kept it with her as she left the garden area where she found herself and headed toward the mansion. It didn’t look particularly inviting, but what choice did she have? Upon reaching the front of the mansion, she spotted a brochure taped to one of the doors. Reading it didn’t answer all of her questions, but it at least gave her a general idea that something weird was going on here.
First-Person Sample:
[Mary hasn’t seen something quite like this before. It’s a journal, sure, but there’s a lot more to it than that. A video feed starts before she notices, so any viewer on the network will see her looking down at the journal, frowning, before she finally realizes that this is somehow recording her.]
What is this…? [It’s said softly, mostly to herself. She then clears her throat and addresses the network, although she feels silly doing it.]
I read the brochure. This place is Wonderland like the movie, huh? I don’t understand how I got here. Is there really no way out? I need to get back to Lawrence.
